Became the Academy's 1-star Battle Tank Musketeer - 40
Thanks to the unit commander's consideration, we were guided to an empty living quarters.
"Ta-da! You can rest here!"
The place I was shown was a barrack-style living quarters. It looked exactly like my past life's military settings. Just looking at it made me feel dizzy.
"No..."
"What's wrong? Are you okay? Are you feeling sick? Should I take you to the medical room?"
The medical room, huh. It's probably the same as in the military.
I've had enough of the military. I'd much rather look at farmlands, so I asked her to take me outside instead.
Once outside, extensive rice fields cultivated by soldiers came into view.
Were all those fields cultivated by the soldiers?
While I was staring blankly at the farmlands, Lily pointed toward one side of the unit.
"Since it's all just rice fields here, I'll guide you to the unit's facilities!"
Perhaps she wasn't fond of the rice fields, as she pulled me toward the direction of the unit's facilities.
Although I wasn't eager to see the unit's facilities, as she held my hand and led me around the military base, we suddenly encountered a uniquely shaped animal.
The creature had pitch-black fur and looked like a goat, but it had three heads.
Had I ever seen an animal like that before?
"Senior, is that... something the unit is raising?"
"No, it's not... What is that?"
"...Could it be a Magical Creature?"
There shouldn't be a Magical Creature here.
I hesitated briefly, considering it might be a rare animal kept by the unit commander since I believed there couldn't be a Magical Creature within the unit.
But then again, there's no way an animal like that could exist.
"It seems like it might have snuck in through some gap in the fence... I'll handle it!"
She drew her Unique Armament—a sword and a shield.
She looked like a retired medieval soldier.
As she charged at the Magical Creature, it let out a loud cry.
"Moo-ooo-ooo!!!"
"Moo-ooo-ooo!!!"
"Moo-ooo-ooo!!!"
The unpleasant, resonating cries echoed because of the three heads.
Lily was engaging it, but it seemed like it would take some time to deal with it.
"Die!!!"
She sliced off one head with her sword and struck another with her shield.
'I feel a sense of familiarity with that fighting style...'
Not many people used a shield.
While feeling that sense of kinship.
-Grrrr...
Another Magical Creature appeared at her side.
"...Another one?"
As Lily turned her head in surprise, I took care of the Magical Creature that appeared from the side with my shotgun.
-BANG!!!
With an intense gunshot, the creature's body burst apart. Lily stared at the scene in a daze.
"What was that?"
"It seems the gap in the fence is quite large. We should find it and block it before things get out of hand."
"No, not that!"
-KAANG!
She shouted while fighting the creature, now left with two heads.
"If you can fight, help me out!!!"
"...I thought you wanted to fight it, Senior."
"No! Anyone can see I rushed in to save my Junior!!!"
Was that so?
If I'd known, I would have dealt with it sooner.
I quickly blew a large hole in the creature's body with the shotgun.
The Magical Creature collapsed to the ground and shortly after, coughed up blood from its remaining two heads before dying.
"Phew... I almost got hurt."
"…"
It was just one Magical Creature?
When I looked at her with disbelief, she protested.
"I'm normal! You're just too strong!"
After taking down the Violet Giant before, the power of my shotgun has significantly increased. Thanks to that, I could take down the Magical Creature in one shot.
In the past, such a tough method of destroying the body wouldn't have worked, and I would have needed to shoot two or three times at each head.
"Are all Academy cadets this strong?"
"I'm just about average."
Considering even the second and third years, there were quite a few strong ones. There was no lie in saying I'm average.
Lily seemed shocked by this comment but quickly recovered.
"Well, there's no helping it. Rather than that... let's report the situation and go find that hole."
"Yes."
She took out a walkie-talkie from her pocket and reported the current situation.
"Magical Creatures found inside the unit... What? Return to the barracks... Yes, I understand."
She seemed startled, asked again, and then told me.
"They're telling us to return to the barracks now?"
"Did they say why?"
"They're going to withdraw the unit."
"What?"
Suddenly?
"Is someone coming down... there?"
At the entrance of the mountain where the supply unit is located, a sentry from one of the companies was waiting.
He spotted something coming down from the mountain.
Something painted completely black.
They were descending from the mountain in great numbers.
It wasn't just one or two.
An enormous horde filled the entire field of vision as they ceaselessly came down.
"Magical Creatures, it's Magical Creatures!!!"
A sentry shouted loudly.
The soldiers waiting nearby were startled and rushed out.
"What on earth are those!!!"
Their mission was clearly to retreat with the withdrawing unit.
They hadn't been told anything about fighting Magical Creatures.
But what is the deal with this number of Magical Creatures?
What are these waves of Magical Creatures cascading down the mountain?
A company commander, who rushed to the frontline upon hearing the sentry's screams, quickly assessed the situation.
‘Can we hold out with the current troops?’
He wanted to retreat if possible, but...
Could they retreat in the face of such a number of Magical Creatures?
Retreating and getting caught from behind would result in an even greater loss.
'Rather than being wiped out while retreating, it's better to die fighting.'
The best course of action for the company right now was judged to be only one: to fight against the Magical Creatures.
The company commander radioed for support from the higher command while shouting.
"Everyone!!! Hold out until the supply unit comes down!!!"
When we returned to the barracks, many people were gathered, fully armed.
As they happened to be counting numbers, we joined the group.
Then I asked the soldier standing next to me.
"Senior, what's going on right now?"
"Oh, I've never seen your face before..."
I gave a brief introduction of myself, and he introduced himself as Aegis before explaining the situation.
"Apparently, there's an urgent order from the division to retreat immediately... We were originally planning to gather supplies and head down by the afternoon..."
Just as he said that.
At the entrance of the unit we came through in the morning.
Two scouts came running back.
Judging by the tattered state of their uniforms, they seemed to have been in a fight.
Their expressions weren't good.
Their scouting results were probably not positive.
The two ran over to where the commander was and reported.
What they said was truly shocking.
"We are completely surrounded on all sides."
"What the hell do you mean?!"
"The entire mountain is swarming with Magical Creatures. It seems they are advancing through this mountain towards the 4th Battalion."
Upon hearing this, the commander's face turned ashen.
"Damn, but there's no choice; get ready to head down the mountain immediately!"
[Supply Unit!!! How much longer? We're at our limit here!!! Get down here now!!!]
"Damn... we want to as well!"
The commander shouted, struggling to control her voice over the radio.
The situation is dire.
A company equipped with various transport means and equipment is preparing for the unit's withdrawal.
It was a battle against Magical Creatures down the mountainside.
Our way of survival was to swiftly descend the mountain and join the company, but...
Now that the mountain itself was overrun by Magical Creatures. To get down, we'd have to cut through those damned creatures occupying the mountain.
"Who the hell suggested building the unit on top of the mountain..."
With someone’s muttering starting it off, complaints began erupting all around. It was the usual talk for such dire situations.
As these were not comments that needed much attention, I continued with my own tasks in silence.
-Click, clatter.
After loading Iscaliote's gun, I moved to stand next to the unit leader.
And then I spoke.
"Ma’am, I have something to tell you."
"You..."
The unit leader looked me over and then, as if recalling, said, "Cadet? Why all of a sudden... If it’s not urgent, tell me later."
"I have a way to break through."
I looked into the distance at the horde of Magical Creatures occupying the mountain.
With the current force of our unit, we might be able to break through to a certain extent. However, since the number of those creatures is uncertain...
If we charged in blindly, and there turned out to be more of them than expected, we could all die.
Because of this, the unit leader seemed to be waiting for the creatures to pass, but...
If we waited too long, the company holding out below wouldn't withstand it and would be crushed.
If possible, we had to break through those Magical Creatures and descend now.
It was our only way to survive.
Also, I had thought of a way to shatter these creatures.
'While inside the Violet Giant, although there are more now than at that time... I can definitely crush them.’
The power I absorbed when I killed the Violet Giant.
It made me significantly stronger.
And now that I've become this strong, I believed without a doubt that I could destroy all those Magical Creatures.
