The Art of Using a Regressor - 21
After arriving at the dormitory and resting, everyone slowly began to speak, their minds seemingly occupied.
"Ha... damn, what the hell is going on? Are we at least not in a situation where we have to fight monsters right now?"
At Kang Iseo's question, Seo Yu-ju slowly opened her mouth, as if she wanted to explain what she understood.
"From what I heard, this place seems to be a facility that trains newcomers like us. It looks like we will receive training for three months here, and then join a clan based on the offers we receive."
Hyun-jin frowned, finding the situation complicated.
"Ugh... Then does that mean we will all separate in three months?"
I watched Seo Yu-ju's reaction, curious about her thoughts.
"Some may separate, and some may enter the same clan together."
Everyone looked troubled. Since we had risked our lives together and overcome crises, the idea of parting ways wasn't something they welcomed.
'If that's how they feel... this is actually good for me.'
From my perspective, their reaction was quite reassuring. If we were to judge by status windows, I was the most likely to be abandoned.
The more emotionally attached they were, the higher the chance I could enter the same clan as them.
'I must stick with Seo Yu-ju no matter what.'
Who knows what kind of dangers lie ahead? Separating from the regressor would be insane.
I had to cling to Seo Yu-ju, who knew the future, no matter what. Judging by her reactions so far, she didn't seem likely to abandon me, but nothing in the world is ever 100 percent certain.
Wanting to get an idea of her thoughts, I asked her, "Yu-ju, what are you planning to do? Have you thought about it at all?"
Everyone was waiting for Seo Yu-ju's response. She was the implicit leader of the group.
'Yeah... you're not going to abandon me, right? Huh? We built a connection in the first round, didn't we?'
I trusted our regressor. No, I had no choice but to trust her.
"I think... no matter which clan we enter... it would be best if we all stayed together."
Her answer was the best one I could have hoped for. My anxiety eased somewhat.
'Past me, I sincerely thank you.'
The others also seemed pleased with her response, their expressions noticeably brightening.
"More than that... those guys who just hid during the tutorial, they seem to be treated poorly here..."
Indeed, those who had done nothing and those who had cleared the dungeon received completely different treatment.
The man named Kang Seong-jun, whom we met earlier, was likely one of the strongest individuals on this continent. The fact that he personally guided us showed just how much interest those in charge had in us.
On the other hand, from their perspective, there was no reason to be particularly kind to those who had chosen to hide rather than fight during the tutorial.
At Kang Iseo's remark, Ho-won spoke up.
"Don't worry about them too much, they are simply paying the price for living comfortably until now."
No one could disagree with that. While they ate the food we provided and slept soundly without fear of monsters, we risked our lives in battle.
"Well... I was just saying it, then does that mean we’re being treated well?"
This time, Seo Yu-ju answered.
"I think they will treat us well, they will want to recruit us no matter what."
"Uh... sure, we did clear the dungeon, but don’t you think the treatment is a bit too much?"
At Kang Iseo's question, this time, I answered.
"It's probably because we cleared the tutorial much faster than the average time."
She looked puzzled by my response and asked, "How do you know that?"
I calmly explained to her.
"Iseo, think about how they reacted when they first saw us. They looked at us as if they couldn't believe it. They kept asking how it was possible within just a month."
"Yun-seong is right, I think we passed the tutorial significantly faster than average. That’s why we’re getting this kind of treatment, they must want us."
There was one thing that puzzled me about Seo Yu-ju. Why did she push us to clear the tutorial so quickly?
'Does she want to stand out? That doesn’t seem to be the case.'
She could have easily led us at a steady pace to clear the dungeon in the average time. But for some reason, she had us clear it quickly.
I had no idea why.
'Is there some reason for this? I don’t know. Maybe she needed the reputation of clearing the tutorial in record time.'
After some time, Kang Seong-jun, the man who guided us earlier, returned.
"How are you all doing? Feeling better?"
Seo Yu-ju responded politely.
"Thanks to you, I feel much more rested, thank you."
"Hahaha! No need to thank me. I’m just glad you had a good rest."
'...What is this?'
He was being overly friendly.
I had expected someone else to come and guide us, not Kang Seong-jun himself. Up until just a little while ago, he didn’t seem like the kind of person who would personally escort us again.
"Please follow me, there’s a large auditorium where we’ll explain the general details of the training, ah! The other new recruits are already there."
'...They heard, huh?'
If they had already gathered the other recruits, there was a high chance they had heard about our actions during the tutorial.
'Now I understand why he came back personally.'
Not just me, but initially Seo Yu-ju alone—regardless, our group had turned the starting building into a camp, gathered people, and cleared the tutorial.
'Now his reaction makes sense.'
From their perspective, it must have been absurd. During the tutorial, most people were too busy just trying to survive, yet we had cleared it in record time.
And as if that wasn’t enough, we had even taken care of others.
How must they be seeing us?
As expected, Kang Seong-jun started speaking to us.
“I’ve heard a little from the others... They said that during the tutorial, you gathered survivors, secured food, distributed it, and even protected them from monsters. Is that true?”
Seo Yu-ju responded to Kang Seong-jun’s words.
“Ah... Yes, that’s right.”
He seemed quite shocked.
If before he had looked at us as though we were precious gems, now he was staring at us as if we were monsters.
‘A warrior of his caliber is looking at us like we’re monsters…’
It was a very strange feeling.
Suddenly, Ahn Tae-woo spoke up as if he had something to say to Kang Seong-jun.
“To be exact... At first, Yu-ju did everything alone. As soon as the tutorial began and the monsters arrived, she grabbed a spear and directed everyone, holding off the monsters from inside the building.”
“...You mean she held them off from the initial building?”
It seemed like he hadn’t heard the full details, only a rough summary.
Now that he finally recognized Seo Yu-ju’s worth, I could sense him closely examining her from the corner of his eye.
‘He’s probably reassessing her value drastically.’
“That’s not all, Yu-ju essentially took on the role of our leader, and if she hadn’t been there during the boss fight, we would have lost people.”
Seo Yu-ju seemed quite burdened by Ahn Tae-woo’s words. It looked like she hadn’t expected such praise and was clearly flustered.
“T-Tae-woo?! That’s... a bit much!”
Kang Seong-jun, having a sudden realization, asked us a question.
“Wait... Pardon me, but I just realized... Are you saying that no one died in the dungeon?”
At this, Ahn Tae-woo seemed surprised as well. After all, we had managed to keep everyone alive.
“Huh... Yes, everyone survived.”
Kang Seong-jun looked at Seo Yu-ju with a hint of awe and spoke.
“Truly... incredible.”
It seemed like he had no words left. He still couldn’t believe what he had heard.
‘...So normally, it’s expected that people die in dungeons.’
Now that I thought about it, I recalled how ridiculously brutal the dungeon’s difficulty had been.
From my experience clearing it, it felt as though the difficulty had been designed for at least half of the participants to die before completion.
“Since we’ll be arriving at the auditorium soon, let me brief you a little in advance. After listening to the speech in the auditorium, tomorrow will be the time to assess your professions. You all should be able to access your status windows, but in this place, revealing the details of your status window to others is strictly forbidden.”
Yu-rim asked Kang Seong-jun a question.
“Is there any particular reason for that?”
“Hmm... It’s not a special reason, but rather an obvious one. If someone reveals their profession or traits, it’s the same as exposing their weaknesses.”
What he said captured exactly why I couldn’t reveal my unique trait to others.
‘Who would let someone who can access their status window freely roam around... That would mean their weaknesses are exposed.’
This was my biggest concern in the Training Facility—that I would be abandoned by my comrades. Without my unique trait, I was nothing but dead weight.
Since I couldn’t reveal my abilities, over time, others would come to see me as a useless burden.
“Anyway, that’s why there will be a session for you all to record your professions, but you don’t need to write everything down. You only need to list the general role of your profession. For example... swordsman, priest, archer—something simple like that will do, ah! There’s one useful tip I’d like to share.”
“What would that be?”
“If you write down your profession’s rank, it’ll be advantageous when receiving offers from clans. Normally, a profession’s rank indicates its potential. However, do not lie about it. Clans will verify your profession once you join anyway.”
It made sense... The clan executives weren’t fools, they would obviously check if someone had lied about their profession.
“Alternatively... You can list the exact name and rank of your profession but omit your unique trait. Most people can’t determine exact abilities just from a profession’s name. This way, you can conceal your weaknesses while still receiving good offers from clans.”
The way he was explaining everything in such detail made me think that Kang Seong-jun wasn’t actually a bad person.
In fact, to be honest, he seemed rather fair.
‘...If it were me, I wouldn’t have explained all this in such detail.’
There was no guarantee that we would join his clan, so he had no obligation to provide information that might help us join a rival clan.
‘Or maybe he just wants to make a good impression on us. Honestly, that’s the more likely explanation.’
“We’ve arrived at the auditorium, please take a seat in the empty spots at the front. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go prepare for my speech, as I am the Chief Instructor.”
